Remembering
the Pathfinders
What
Can You Do?
For yourself:
A monthly
breast self-examination
The few minutes this takes can save your life. An easy how to is included
in the links at the bottom of this page.
- Remember
to schedule your mammograms
Perhaps not the perfect solution, but the best one we have right now.
- Watch
your diet
Include foods that will help your body and your immune system to stay
healthy. There's no guarantee that a good diet will prevent breast cancer,
but many studies show that it can reduce your risk.
- Alcohol
If you're worried about breast cancer -- do not take a drink to calm
yourself. Many studies have suggested that alcohol may be a factor in
breast cancer. There is disagreement on the amount that will create
an increased risk. If you do drink, try to stick to red wines and dark
beers.
- Exercise
Staying lean reduces the amount of estrogen you produce - especially
if you are post-memopausal.
For
research on prevention and cure:
- Get Involved
You may not be able to start a foundation, but you can help raise funds.
The index on the next page lists many little ways to support breast
cancer research such as buying stamps or visiting sites on the Internet
or taking a walk...
- Get Active
Let your elected -- or soon to be elected -- officials know how you
feel about breast cancer and public action. A letter from you might
just be the piece of information that someone needs to decide that funding
mammograms or research is as important as that special project they
were thinking about.
For
support:
- Care
If you are a survivor, offer your services to help others who are newly
diagnosed, going through treatment or trying to get their lives back
after treatments are finished. Do you remember how that felt? You could
be the person they talk to who really knows what they are going through.
If you are lucky enough never to have been personally touched by breast
cancer, you can still help. Rides to the doctor or babysitting during
a chemo session are sometimes hard to come by. Stopping by with a dinner,
pre-cooked, may get you nominated for angels wings.
