Remembering
the Pathfinders
In
Their Memory
Breast Cancer is a treatable
disease, but the toll continues as we battle to find prevention and a
cure. As October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, draws to a close most
cultures set aside this time to honor the members of their society that
have gone from this world. Halloween - All Hallow's Eve - is the Western
tradition. Some celebrate all souls day on October 31st. This is the time
of year for remembering and celebrating the spirits of those who have
gone ahead -- the Pathfinders in Breast Cancer terms. They have left their
mark on the Breast Cancer community. In many ways they have touched us
all...
Susan
G. Komen
Nancy Brinker
lost her sister to breast cancer - and founded the Komen Foundation in
response. The foundation sponsors "The Race for the Cure" and many other
fund raising activities aimed at eradicating breast cancer.
Linda
Creed
You probably know the song "The Greatest Love of All." This is one of
the many which were written by Linda Creed. Linda's close friend, Lisa
Brownstein, began the Linda Creed Breast Cancer Foundation in her memory.
Dorothy
LaMont
An advocate for everyone, but focusing on Canadian issues, Dorothy LaMont
recently ended a seven year battle against breast cancer. The Canadian
Cancer Society enjoyed her energy and leadership skills - international
breast cancer activism benefited.
John
Nick
His passing prompted his daughter, Nancy Nick, to begin a foundation dedicated
to educating the community about breast cancer in men.
Barbara
Ann Karmanos
In memory of his late wife, Peter Karmanos made a gift of $15 million
to the integrated cancer system known as the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer
Institute. It is one of the largest cancer centers in the United States
and the only major center named for a woman.
Sherry
Kohlenberg
Wrote a children's book, ''Sammy's Mommy Has Cancer,'' to help her young
son understand her illness...
Kathy
Woodyard - Bart
Gayla Wilson,
Kathy's mom, has become an advocate for educating breast cancer survivors
in their rights as patients.
Faces
of Breast Cancer Gallery
The Breast Cancer Forum is an online support group that provides hope
for survivors and honors past members in an online gallery. The other
galleries contain faces of survivors who are in treatment still or remain
cancer free.
The
Breast Cancer Wall of Courage
Amy Feld, PsyD began adding names to the wall in 1998. Candles shine
for the Pathfinders on the list.
There are many more
who live in our hearts and our memories, sadly, too many to list all of
the sites and names. The hope is that you will use the information that
you learned during Breast Cancer Awareness Month to help yourself and
others win the battle against breast cancer so that candles can burn on
our birthday cakes instead of in memorials.
